Brundtland report defines sustainable development as the development model that allows us to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

It is very important that we make clear what we mean by sustainability in the context of fashion. Sustainability is a complex concept and there is not one particular definition right or wrong (Firth, 2015).

The most global definition of sustainability is taken as meeting the requirements without compromising the ability of future generations to limit their needs (Brundtland - Report, 1987, p8).

This definition of sustainability is also the basic assumption of LUXUBILITY. The importance of preserving the resilience of nature is emphasized by this definition. And it challenges businesses to implement this, from supply chain to the retail consumer experience (Stong, 1997). In all industries, including the luxury segment, to deal economical with scarce materials, safe production of the products should be guaranteed, should avoid contamination and should tread employees with respect. This is also referred as "upstream" practices. In addition, "downstream" practices are also crucial, as consciously dealing with packaging waste and 'end-of-life' of a product (so that everything does not end up in a big heap). We see sustainability as a triple bottom line, a classical approach to CSR coined by John Elkington. The three layers consist of economic profitability, respect for the environment and social responsibility (Johnson, 2009). Profitability is sometimes replaced by prosperity, to give it a broader meaning than just profit.
